Finally decided to join the 21st century. Got a 4k tv. Its awesome. Our DVD player is a holdover from college... Circa Bush 42’s inauguration. It has component or composite or svid output. No upconvert, no hdmi. Time to buy a blu ray.
My 4k tv is a smart tv. I don’t need that other crap. I need a blu ray player. I want something to play a disk. Nothing more. The cheapest player I can find is $40-60. Am I wrong to think that seems high?

No, that sounds pretty cheap. I got the Magic of Blu Ray (tm) recently via getting an X Bone, though, which was... more than $60. Slightly.

Better use of money would be to get a used PS3, does everything a Blu-ray player does plus games and a video store and a hard drive. Can be found in good condition for the same price range. The newer slim models almost all have 100 gb or larger hard drives to load up with content either from the PSN store or your home network/computers.

Dude. You just shelled out on a 4k TV and are now scrimping on the inputs? While Oppo is the best, I’ve had good luck with the middle range Samsung players. Expect to pay around $100-150 for a good Blu-Ray. Also get a decent HDMI cord, avoid Monster though, they’re overpriced for what you get.
I’ve used a number of Blu-Ray players over the last 10 years or so, and you will see a difference. Ideally, since you have a 4k, you will want one that upconverts so you can get the full resolution, but my guess is that's going to be more than you want to spend.

Concur with all of the above. Got my Samsung Blu-ray player back when HD-DVD stated circling the toilet. It’s served me well with zero issues.
